WWII Veterans Appreciation Dinner and Dance
The most popular event of VMM's year was held on Saturday, May 17th at the Centralia Eagles. The dinner began at 5:30 pm and was started with a self serve salad and followed with a main course of a two piece chicken dinner. A dessert bar was available for those who like to top the meal off with the "sweet stuff".
At 6:15pm Whitey Thomas, trumpet player with the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band, delighted everyone with some of the most popular songs of World War II. Whitey then signed autographs afterwards.
Lee Grimes, Director of VMM, led the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance and then followed with opening remarks and an update on the Building Campaign.
Caitlin Panteleeff and Julie Brooks, High School Juniors, for several months had made beautiful red, white and blue bouquets to honor those currently serving in the Armed Forces.
The girls dressed in clothing of the 1940's and were escorted by James and Anthony, dressed in World War II military clothing. They looked like they had walked directly out of the '40's!
Karrie Kinsman-Withrow and her sister-in-law had made this beautiful "In-Service Banner", reminiscent of the World War II window banners.
Each star represented a Lewis County veteran currently serving in the armed forces. Karrie's father, Jim Kinsman, is a Medal of Honor recipient from the Vietnam War.
Ellen and Jonnelle Lacey brought "Betty's Blanket" for display. Last year they brought one small section of the military patch blanket they are restoring in honor of their mother. This year, they have completed the blanket and it is 6' tall and over 36' long with nearly 1300 patches. The Lacey girls also plan on taking this blanket on a Washington State Tour this summer.
Back by popular request was the dance band, "The Sound of Swing" who provided the music for everyone to dance the night away.
VMM's tribute to veterans began with the WW2 veterans in attendance and continued up through those members serving in the armed forces today. Each group was given a standing ovation from our patriotic crowd.
The Jitterbug contest was dividing into the 70 and over and under 69 categories.
The crowd's ovations determined the winning couples!
In the end it was hard to tell who was more tired after the wonderful night of dancing, youngins or the not quite so youngins....

This day was extra special because all eligible Korean War veterans were presented with the Republic of Korea War Service Medal. Prior to the main ceremony, the Ft. Next, special guest speaker WA Senator Paull Shin, spoke of his experience as an orphan during the Korean War. He became a house boy for US Army GI's who would go off during the day to fight in combat. He recalls that many times many of the GI's did not return. Senator Paull Shin was adopted by an American GI and came to the United States. After achieving a GED, he went on to college to graduate from the University of Washington with a Ph.D. in history. It was a truly special opportunity to listen to Senator Shin tell about his experiences as a child and later as a professor and finally as a elected representative in the Washington State Senate. His emotional "Thank You" to the Korean War veterans in the audience, brought tears to the eyes of all. Laurence Mark,in memory of his brother Ottis Paul Mark, composed a poem entitled "A Soldier Without A Rifle". Ottis Paul Mark was a medic with the7th Division in Korea and is still listed as missing in action (MIA) from the Yalu River in December 1950. Mr. Mark fought back tears as he read the poem dedicated to his brother. Keynote speaker Major General (Ret) John A. Hemphill spoke of his time in Korea and the medal the Korean War Veterans were about to receive should serve as a monument to the state of Korea today. He feels that due to the sacrifice of many American and Allied Forces lives, Korea is a better place today. He went on to discuss how South Korea has become a flourishing nation with a strong economy. Vietnam Veteran Johnny Dunnagan sang a very moving song "A Hero For Today".Many tears were shed as Mr. Dunnagan sang this song with his beautiful voice. The medals were presented to all eligible Korean War Veterans by the Ft. Lewis Chapter AUSA & Major General (Ret) Nam-pyo Park. General Park served as a South Korean officer during the Korean War. Each veteran came forward as their name was called to receive the Republic of Korea War Service Medal. One hundred thirty seven (137) veterans came forward to receive their medal. As the veterans held their salute, Mr. LeRoy's eyes welled up with tears, as he returned the salute. It was very touching moment. At the conclusion of the ceremony, all the veterans in attendance stood around Mr. LeRoy and pictures were taken. It was a very special time as veterans from World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, Gulf War, Cold War, and Peactime were gathered in one spot. The gathering symbolized the sacrifice made by so many in the 20th century to provide and protect freedom, not only for America, but also for people around the world. The program included presentation of Colors by Vietnam Veterans of America, Chpt 512, Vancouver, WA; Guest Speaker Lt. Col. Patti Hendrix (2 tour Vietnam Nurse), special music by Chuck Lawrence, special reading by Randy Pennington, Invocation and Benediction by Capt. Many tears were shed and many hugs were given, by both veterans and civilians. As director Grimes stated in his opening remarks, "Our program is not grandiose, no shining lights, no political overtones, no fancy words or sugar coated statements, but solely intended to bring recognition and praise to you who so valiantly served in Vietnam." Patti Hendrix served two tours in Vietnam with the 85th Semi-Mobile Army Surgical Hospital at Phu Bai. Her presentation was a stirring recollection of times in the surgical hospital, of happy times with the men and women and the sad times experienced by all. Her presentation was extremely moving and all who were in attendance were moved to tears at different times. As the veterans gave their name, unit and years served in Vietnam, many presented Col. Hendrix with a salute, a hug or a remembrance of crossed paths. It was truly a remarkable and memorable program. Vietnam veteran Randy Pennington, 101st Airborne, read his very moving poem about the "War Dogs". As he presented his heartfelt recitation, a dog barked in the background, as if to acknowledge the sacrifice of his kind. Thank you Randy, for this most moving presentation. After the ceremony, there was a picture taking session, a cake cutting ceremony, tables were set up where veterans brought their scrap books and pictures for others to see, videos were available in the viewing room in reference to the Vietnam War, and tours were conducted of the museum. We have a wonderful section dedicated to the Vietnam veterans and if you have not seen it yet, you will be moved by our tribute to those that so valiantly fought in Vietnam.

Each veteran took a moment to reflect on his memories of that terrible day. It was clear that although Pearl Harbor was nearly 60 years ago, these men remembered that day as if it were yesterday. Wade Leroy's 100th Birthday
On March 14, 1999, the Veterans Memorial Museum honored Mr. Hubert Wade LeRoy, World War I veteran, in a very special celebration for his 100th birthday. Mr. LeRoy was a Corporal in W.W.I who served with the Oregon National Guard, 6th Company Coast Artillery Corps from Feb. 10, 1916 to Aug. 5, 1917. He served in France with Battery E, 65th Artillery Coast Artillery Corps from Aug. 5 1917 to May 16, 1919. The celebration began with remarks by Mr. Lee Grimes Founder and Director of the Veterans Memorial Museum, on the importance of remembering and honoring our past veterans from all wars. Next Mr. LeRoy's son, Herb LeRoy, talked about his fathers military experience and how his father fought in one of the bloodiest and most tragic wars this country has known. He stated that, "These men were fighting the war that was to end all wars." Following Mr. Herb LeRoy's comments, Vietnam veteran Bruce Longnecker, read a letter presented to Mr. LeRoy from the Governor of the State of Washington, Mr. Gary Locke. Next, certificates were presented to Mr. Wade LeRoy from the offices of both Senator Slade Gorton and Congressman Brian Baird both from the State of Washington. On behalf of the US Army, SSG Travis Patterson, a Persian Gulf War veteran, presented Mr. LeRoy with a plaque honoring his courage and sacrifice during W.W.I. Mr. LeRoy was also presented with a certificate from the local chapter of the Civil Air Patrol. Mr. LeRoy was then presented with an Oregon World War I Service Medal and a W.W.I Honorable Discharge Pin. The most touching part of the celebration was when Mr. Loren Estep, W.W.II veteran, presented CPL. Wade LeRoy with a World War I Victory Medal. Mr. LeRoy had lost his original medal over the years and it was truly an amazing moment to see his face light-up as the medal was pinned on him. The celebration closed with the "Polka Dots" playing "Happy Birthday" and "For He is a Jolly Good Fellow." It was a very special day for Mr. LeRoy and for all of us who were privileged enough to be there for this very special event. On behalf of the Veterans Memorial Museum, we would like to thank CPL. LeRoy for serving his country and coming to the call when his country needed him. We would also like to thank all of you who took the time to come down to the museum and help us honor this true American hero.

He ended by reading his heart-felt poem "Who Will Remember." We had Pearl Harbor veterans from the USS Oklahoma, USS Bagley, USS Maryland and the USS New Orleans.
